Central Bank Ownership Rules
Egypt’s Central Bank and Banking System Law sets rules for owning shares in banks. Shareholders who own more than 5% and up to 10% of a bank’s issued capital must notify the Central Bank within 15 days.
Ownership exceeding 10%, or any stake that results in effective control, requires prior approval from the Central Bank’s board. Violating this requirement renders the transaction null and void.
The law also defines effective control and addresses ownership through inheritance or wills, allowing up to two years to adjust holdings where required.
