Sarah Khalifa Case Awaits Appeal Hearing

Egypt’s producer Sarah Khalifa is awaiting a new development in the high-profile drug case, as the Court of Appeal is expected to set a hearing date for appeals against the first-instance verdict sentencing her and 11 other defendants to death.

The Cairo Criminal Court, convening in Fifth Settlement, sentenced the 12 defendants to death and imposed a fine of EGP 500,000, according to the published case details. The charges involved an alleged organized criminal group accused of importing materials used to manufacture synthetic drugs for trafficking, as well as possessing firearms and ammunition without licenses.

The court also sentenced nine other defendants to life imprisonment and acquitted seven, according to the same report.

Additional Charges and Financial Measures

Khalifa is also reported to face a separate drug-use accusation. The case originated from investigations into alleged activities involving the importation, manufacture and distribution of controlled substances.

Investigators ordered precautionary measures involving the defendants’ assets and bank accounts. The case file also refers to evidence including witness statements, digital records, photographs and video footage.

According to the published details, authorities seized more than 750 kilograms of synthetic drugs and raw materials allegedly intended for manufacturing them.

The next procedural step depends on the Court of Appeal’s scheduling decision and the subsequent judicial proceedings. The defendants’ legal positions remain subject to the applicable court process.
