Developing Al-Azhar Education: Three Baccalaureate Tracks Preserve Religious Identity

Dr. Ahmed El-Sharqawy, Acting Head of the Al-Azhar Institutes Sector, emphasized that the development of Al-Azhar education aims to balance the institution’s longstanding educational traditions with the requirements of the modern era.

Speaking at the first educational forum of the Al-Azhar Institutes Sector, held under the slogan “Authentic Al-Azhar Education… Keeping Pace with the Era… Building the Future,” El-Sharqawy discussed efforts to improve educational quality, assessment methods and the implementation of the new Al-Azhar Baccalaureate system.

He explained that the development plan seeks to preserve the importance of religious sciences and Arabic while equipping students with modern knowledge and skills.

Three Al-Azhar Baccalaureate Tracks

El-Sharqawy said the Al-Azhar Baccalaureate represents an important step toward developing secondary education by giving students greater flexibility in choosing their academic paths, reducing the number of required subjects and providing more specialized options.

The system includes three main tracks:

Medicine and Life Sciences

Engineering and Computer Science

Arts, Humanities and Business Administration

The new system is designed to give students more time to discover their abilities and interests before choosing a specialized track.

El-Sharqawy also stressed that religious sciences and Arabic language studies will remain a common and essential component across all Baccalaureate tracks, as they represent the core of Al-Azhar’s educational identity.

He concluded by emphasizing that the success of the new system requires cooperation among students, parents, teachers and educational leaders to transform development plans into tangible improvements within Al-Azhar institutes.
