Why Did the U.S. Target Iran's Lark Island? Washington Moves to Prevent New Mines in the Strait of Hormuz

The U.S. military carried out a strike targeting Iranian military sites on Lark Island, according to Axios, in an effort to prevent Iran from deploying naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz.

The report cited a U.S. official as saying that American forces targeted two Iranian launch platforms on the island after detecting Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces preparing to launch missiles carrying naval mines toward the Strait of Hormuz.

The strike comes after the U.S. military announced last week that it had completed the removal of all mines from the main navigational channel of the strait, one of the world's most important routes for energy shipments.

U.S. President Donald Trump had warned Iran that any vessel or boat attempting to lay new mines in the strait would be “destroyed immediately and systematically,” stressing that a policy of “zero tolerance” toward mine-laying was now fully in effect.

Lark Island is strategically important because of its location near the Strait of Hormuz, making military activity there directly connected to maritime security and the movement of commercial vessels in the region.
